Basil Wolverton

Plop! # 1

American artist, Basil Wolverton would have been 100 years old today! I was going through some boxes of comic books and stumbled upon some issues of "Plop!" which featured the work of Basil Wolverton. He only did a handful of covers (stopping due to a stroke in 1974) but the ones he did warped my mind for the years to come. Not only were the covers to the books amazing but the interior art was also mind blowing due to contributors like Sergio Aragones. The horror anthology, in the vein of EC faves like Eerie & Creepy, was hosted by three lowlifes, Cain Abel and Eve.

Now I know, Basil had done way more work besides "Plop", which was some of the last he had published. He had also contributed in other amazing magazines, like Mad (heard of it?), as well as a motherload of solo works. But picking up these books gave me my first exposure to his work, so I have a childhood love for them, which lasted into my adulthood! R.I.P. Mr. Wolverton.

Wednesday Comics

Issue #1 of "Wednesday Comics" comes out today and we're pretty excited about it. I will admit, I'm not usually a fan of the whole capes n' cowls superhero comics but there are a couple factors that have changed my mind. One being that HQ friend and BF of designer Elaine Ho (Roadkill), Brenden Fletcher wrote an installment which was illustrated by childhood friend Karl Kerschl.

The idea behind "Wednesday Comics" is to showcase some of the best writers and artists in comics today in a weekly format that reinvents the weekly newspaper comics section. Each 16 page issue is 28" x 20" and features an adventure by various heroes, each on their own 20" x 14" page which will continue throughout the 12 issue run.

Participating writers and artists include:

The Flash:
Brenden Fletcher & Karl Kerscl
Batman: Brian Azzarello & Eduardo Risso
Adam Strange: Paul Pope
Metamorpho: Neil Gaiman & Michael Allred
The Demon and Catwoman: Walter Simonson & Brian Stelfreeze
Deadman: Dave Bullock
Kamandi: Dave Gibbons & Ryan Sook
Superman: John Arcudi & Lee Bermejo
Wonder Woman:Ben Caldwell
Green Lantern: Kurt Busiek & Joe Quinones
Teen Titans: Eddie Berganza & Sean Galloway
Supergirl: Jimmy Palmiotti & Amanda Conner
Hawkman: Kyle Baker
SRGT. Rock: Adam Kubert & Joe Kubert
Metal Men: Dan Didio & Ian Churchill

Congratulations Brenden! I'm going to pick up a copy on my way to work.

Josiane Perron

Wow, summer is HERE in all its humid glory. When it's this hot and humid I go into a panic and can only think about what to do/wear to stay cool. Being a clothing designer I immediately think "COTTON. MUST. WEAR. COTTON" but perhaps many of you don't know/care about textiles, and are wondering what the heck I'm talking about....Well, for hot/humid weather cotton can rarely be beat (linen, silk and bamboo are pretty on par though, see a trend with the natural fibres?). You may think that cute little chiffon dress will be the coolest thing to wear when it's +30, but in reality the dress is probably polyester chiffon (perhaps you're lucky and it's silk?) and no matter how skimpy your little chiffon dress is, a cotton dress will always keep you cooler.

SO, on that note, I want to recommend the cute dresses and tops from Josiane Perron. This collection is full of preppy/feminine pieces that look great paired up with leather sandals/oxfords, vintage belts and summer hats. Josiane is also an incredible patternmaker, and all of her stuff fits amazingly well, and has great little thoughtfully placed pleats and tucks.

See you all this weekend!

Anyone there? Bueller? Bueller?

Hey everyone! It's been awhile since I've blogged, so I have to say THANK YOU to Tyson for taking up the blogging responsibilities over the last while, it's been crazy around here to say the least. I can't spill the beans quite yet on ALL the exciting things that are about to happen with my line (Norwegian Wood) but I can spill on a few things so you'll know I'm not lying when I say I've been super busy!

-First of all the Norwegian Wood Black Elastic Harness will be available in US retailer Free People (big sister of Urban Outfitters) in the coming months, so stay tuned for more info soon!
-I've been collaborating with Marc Simard of Broundoor over the last few weeks, we've come up with a way to make a leather version of the cage skirt, so watch for that soon as well (see photo above)
- I'm working on a super limited edition set of harnesses and fringe necklaces for GORGEOUS online vintage shop Shrimpton Couture, stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks as well!
-For all you Winnipeggers I've got two things on the horizon:
First of all Marc (see above) and I will be heading out for the Winnipeg Folk Festival (July 8-12), so watch out for us there, we're a corner booth operating under the collective name "WeMade", stop by and say hi!
Secondly, I'm proud to announce that Norwegian Wood has its first Winnipeg stockist, The Urban Boutique! I'll be bringing down a bunch of fringe necklaces, fringe earrings and feather necklaces on the 7th of July, so now you know where to get your NW fix in the Peg.

So that's about it for now, I promise posting will be back up to par, I've got a whole bunch of designer profiles to put up in the next few weeks!

Happy Belated Birthday Maurice Sendak!!!

One of my all time favorite illustrators and story tellers just turned 81 this month! (June 10) I am one of the hundreds of thousands of people who can say with out of doubt that "Where The Wild Things Are" has been a fave since the first time my Mother read it to me. Happy Birthday Mr. Sendak and thank you, thank you, thank you!

When I saw the trailer for the upcoming film, I was literally tearing up.

An original drawing that is going for $6500. (My birthday is February 2nd. In case you were wondering)

Winnipeg Extravaganza

We're back from Winnipeg!

Our 1 year old niece, Violet is checking out the new horse we made for her. I was pretty relieved that she wasn't terrified of it.

I have a small pile of boxes that have been stored at my Fathers house since I left for Montreal 6 years ago. Every time I go back home to visit, I take a few things back with me to Montreal, so my Dad can have his basement free of my crap. It's mainly things from my childhood like old toys (He-Man, Fraggles.... which now have a home in my studio) some books and photo albums. My Mother had saved alot of this stuff for me and I'm always amazed at what I find.

Yeah, that's right. That's me all dressed up and pissed off about it. I was supposed to be my Uncle's ring bearer but I made a stink about it and didn't end up doing it. Eep! Sorry Uncle Danny.
I can't remember the name of this book because the cover is gone. But it's a pretty creepy story of a cat that eats a shitload of people and then is chopped open by a woodsman, spilling all the women and children out. It's pretty dark and reminds me of an old Eastern Eurpean folk tale. (Everyones getting chopped by an axe in those stories.... yeesh!)

This book is hilarious! It's filled with instructions on how to make costumes out of paper and pipecleaners.
The results from the book..... My sister dressed like an angel and my brother and me as pirates, blowing her away! Take that you smelly angel!

Marcel Dzama

I also had a motherload of Stylus Magazines. It's a bimonthly magazine thats published by students from the University of Winnipeg. They always feature a pretty cool local artist's work on the covers.

Marcel Dzama again

And this is the latest issue featuring art by Devon Kerslake.

I also bought a bunch of music from the 'Peg.... enjoy.
